Short answer: the playbook needs to separate three layers: the page, the site, and the external distribution. Anthropic documents web search and citations, but does not publish a mechanism by which a page format guarantees selection. For professional services, the controllable objective is that the firm, experts, services and claims are consistent and verifiable.
Precondition 1: entity mapping
Lists publicly appearing firm, brands, practices, services and experts. For each, keep the URL owner and the relationship with the organization.
Precondition 2: claims registry
Keep claims that can change the decision: services, industries, methodologies, roles, certifications, geography and publishable results. Each claim has owner and last verified.
What do you change on the page
The service page must explain the scope, process, limits and next step. Thought leadership explains the problem or methodology, does not copy the offer.
Author profiles must reflect the actual role and be correctly linked to the articles.
What are you changing in the site?
Define owners for company, service, methodology and expert. Consolidate pages with duplicate intent and fix canonical, redirects and internal links.
Contain volatile sources in a controlled number of surfaces.
What do you change in distribution
Prioritize professional directories, association profiles, speaker pages and other surfaces relevant to the buyer journey. Correct only what you can legitimately administer.
Deployment sequence
- entity inventory;
- registry claims;
- first-party audit;
- P0/P1 correction;
- ownership URLs;
- author/profile cleanup;
- external profiles;
- query set;
- monitoring;
- QA regression.
Service page
Don't write for "Claude". Write for the customer who needs to understand what they are getting and what they are not getting. Claims must have internal provenance.
Thought leadership
Articles must have a dominant issue and information gain. An article does not become more quotable by repeating the company name.
Author identity
Byline, profile and Article markup must match. The reviewer is distinct from the author when the editorial process requires it.
Case studies
It preserves scope, method and limitations. Don't make up results or confidential details to make your case more "convincing".
External distribution
For each external profile save the entity, URL, owner, access, last verified and differences. `external unresolved' is a valid state.
Query monitoring
Build questions on awareness, shortlist, methodology, comparison and implementation. Save factual accuracy, source mix and timestamp.
Do not use owned-citation rate as the only KPI.
How do you measure
- first-party conflict rate;
- profile consistency;
- author mismatch rate;
- factual accuracy;
- source mix;
- time-to-resolution;
- detectable referral.
Metrics should not be compressed into a single score.
Acceptance criteria
The playbook passes the gate when:
- priority entities have an owner;
- material claims have provenance;
- pages have a distinct role;
- author profiles are consistent;
- technical SEO is healthy;
- critical external profiles are mapped;
- the query set is versioned;
- findings have severity;
- rollback is possible;
- There are no promises to quote.
Rollback and limitations
If a consolidation loses information gain, go back and redefine ownership. If an external source cannot be corrected, keep the first-party clear and mark the risk.
Do not alter the truth to imitate a stale director.
Stop criterion
Switch to monitoring when P0/P1 are closed, priority profiles have status and new observations do not introduce material conflicts.
Escalation matrix for findings
Not all deviations observed in Claude are of equal importance. A correct answer that cites a current third-party publication may remain observation only. A wrong company name, an outdated job role, or an erroneous job description should be escalated, however. Use a simple rubric: P0' for identity or wrong material claim,P1' for service or role inconsistencies, P2' for stale profiles,P3' for variations without decisional impact.
Map of sources on the buyer journey
For awareness, sources can be articles and guides. In the evaluation, the client reaches service pages, methodology, case studies and professional profiles. In the shortlist, directories or associations can become relevant. Keep this map before interpreting the source mix: the same source does not have to dominate all stages for the ecosystem to be healthy.
Editorial gate before publication
For new content, check who owns the professional claims, if the author has the featured role, if the case studies have the necessary consent, and if the results are delimited. Don't add numbers, clients, certifications or results just to make the page easier to cite. Copy must remain valid even if it never appears in an AI response.
How to check a fix
After changing a page, compare first-party registry, public page and critical profiles. Then rerun the exact same questions, in the same language, and note the difference without changing the denominator. A single favorable answer does not close the finding; closure comes from correcting the source and double-checking.
Rollback and editorial custody
Keep previous version and change owner. If a consolidation erases an important difference between two services, go back and redefine ownership. If an external profile cannot be modified, do not compensate with exaggerated claims on the site; mark source as `external unresolved' and keep first-party correct.
Claim ledger
- FACT/EVIDENCE: Anthropic documents web search and citations.
- FACT/EVIDENCE: Google documents Organization, ProfilePage and Article structured data.
- PRACTITIONER GUIDANCE: implementation must separate page, site and distribution.
- NOT PROVEN: a public formula for guaranteeing citation in Claude.
Conclusion
The effective playbook does not follow an isolated citation. Build a coherent public system, with owners and evidence. Citations become an observation on that system, not the lens that distorts it.
