Why the terminology is confusing
SEO has decades of shared vocabulary. AEO and GEO are newer labels, and different practitioners use them differently.
That makes debates about the “correct” acronym less useful than asking a simpler question:
What must a page do to be discoverable, useful and attributable across both classical search and AI-generated answers?
If a page cannot be crawled, it cannot reliably participate. If the system cannot understand the subject and entities, retrieval becomes weaker. The five-layer operating model
1. Crawlability
This is still basic technical SEO.
A useful page should have:
- a stable URL;
- a valid 200 response;
- no accidental
noindex; - a canonical that points to the intended page;
- internal links from relevant pages;
- HTML content available without requiring a fragile client-side rendering path;
- robots directives that match the intended discovery policy.
For Google AI features, Google explicitly says that pages must already be eligible for Search and that no additional AI-specific technical requirements are needed.
For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI separately documents OAI-SearchBot. If a publisher wants pages to be eligible to surface in ChatGPT Search, blocking that crawler is counterproductive. That is a different decision from whether to allow GPTBot for model training.
2. Retrieval
Classical keyword targeting is only part of retrieval.
Modern search and answer systems work with entities, semantic relationships, passages and related sub-queries. Google describes AI features as potentially using query fan-out: the system can issue multiple related searches to assemble a response.
That changes the editorial question from:
“Did I repeat the exact keyword enough?”
into:
“Does this page cover the relevant sub-problems, entities and decision points clearly enough to be retrieved for the larger task?”
A page about marketing automation architecture, for example, should naturally explain triggers, identity, journeys, channels, measurement and governance because those are part of the decision system. It should not create six thin pages solely to capture six keyword variants.
3. Answerability
AEO is most useful as a quality discipline here.
Important questions should have a direct answer near the question, followed by evidence and explanation.
A practical pattern is:
Question → Direct answer → Evidence → Explanation → Next action
This helps humans first. It also makes a passage easier to extract accurately.
Answerability does not mean writing the whole site as FAQ spam. It means reducing ambiguity at the point where the reader needs a decision.
4. Citability
A page can be readable and still be a poor source.
Citability improves when the page makes it easy to identify:
- who wrote the content;
- what the claim is;
- what evidence supports it;
- when the evidence was checked;
- whether the sentence is fact, vendor claim, inference or opinion;
- what original contribution the page adds.
A statement such as “AI search prefers authoritative brands” is vague. A stronger version explains the observed behavior, cites the relevant primary documentation or study, and avoids pretending that correlation is a ranking rule.
This is the difference between sounding confident and being source-worthy.
5. Measurement
Traditional SEO measurement remains useful:
- impressions;
- clicks;
- indexed pages;
- rankings;
- organic sessions;
- conversions.
But AI-mediated discovery adds new observability questions:
- Was the brand cited in an AI answer?
- Which page was cited?
- Which type of query produced the citation?
- Did the referral arrive with a recognizable source parameter?
- Did AI referral traffic convert differently from classical organic traffic?
- Which content is repeatedly used across several answer engines?
The important point is to measure what is actually observable rather than inventing an “AI visibility score” that cannot be reproduced.

- use descriptive headings;
- distinguish facts from opinions;
- cite primary sources close to important claims;
- add original examples, frameworks, data or analysis;
- update time-sensitive claims deliberately.
Measurement
- track Search Console normally;
- segment AI referral sources where observable;
- record citation tests separately from traffic data;
- do not confuse citation frequency with a proven ranking factor;
- review content that earns repeated citations and identify why it is useful.
Common myths
“GEO replaces SEO”
No. If the page is technically weak, unindexable or thin, changing the acronym does not fix it.
