Google states that its normal SEO guidance still applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Bing now exposes AI citation metrics and OpenAI documents crawler access for ChatGPT search. A practical SEO + GEO program can be run as five connected layers.
1. Discoverability
Make the page technically reachable and canonical. That means sensible internal links, indexable HTML, stable URLs, correct canonicals, useful sitemaps and crawler access. Google says pages that appear as supporting links in AI Overviews or AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. OpenAI similarly advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot if they want content to be discoverable and cited in ChatGPT search.
This is why GEO cannot repair weak technical SEO. It sits on top of it.
2. Retrieval fit

5. Measurement
Do not use one metric to represent the entire system.

Week 2: content architecture
Map one primary intent to each important URL. Remove obvious cannibalization. Add missing supporting pages where a topic is too broad for one article.
Week 3: answer and evidence layer
Rewrite openings to answer the query directly. Add definitions, tables, decision criteria, examples and primary-source references. Remove vague claims that cannot be substantiated.
Week 4: measurement
Baseline classic search performance, then add AI citation monitoring where tools expose it. Annotate major content changes so shifts can be compared over time.
What not to do
Do not create near-duplicate “AI versions” of pages. Do not add unsupported statistics because they look quotable. Do not assume schema markup guarantees citations.
